Golf as a Platform

Golf creates value beyond the game. It is a place where relationships form, networks expand and conversations move outside traditional business settings.

Johnson Capital Planning saw an opportunity to use that environment differently.

The strategy positioned Black People Golf at the intersection of community, financial development, wellness and golf education, creating a platform that could serve existing financially engaged professionals while also welcoming people looking to strengthen their financial knowledge, expand their networks or learn the game.

The program strategy organized that ambition around four pillars: Network & Community, Financial Development & Education, Mental Wellness & Health, and Playing & Learning Golf. Audiences ranged from novice golfers entering the sport to experienced and seasoned players who could participate, connect and teach.

Golf became the common ground.

Open the fairway. Build the network.

A Brand Within the Brand

Black People Golf needed enough independence to build its own community and cultural equity without losing its relationship to Johnson Capital Planning.

Channing & Company created an endorsed-brand architecture:

BLACK PEOPLE GOLF
Powered by Johnson Capital Planning

The structure places Black People Golf at the front of the experience while keeping Johnson Capital visibly connected as the organization behind it.

It also changes the entry point into the financial-planning business. Rather than leading with products or financial services, Johnson Capital can begin with a shared interest, a relationship and an experience.

Culture and community first. Financial conversation second.

The model gives Johnson Capital a new way to create relationships in spaces where conventional financial-services marketing would be less natural.

Naming: Saying Exactly What It Is

The name was co-developed by Channing & Company and Johnson Capital Planning’s internal team. Black People Golf is intentionally direct. There is no abstract lifestyle name separating the audience from the activity. Three words establish who the community is and where it belongs.

That clarity became part of the brand strategy itself. Black People Golf could operate as a recognizable platform for clinics, networking, financial education, community programming and golf experiences while remaining immediately understandable.

The name does not ask the audience to decode the proposition. Black people. Golf.

Belonging, Built Into the B

The strategic idea was compressed into a single mark. Channing & Company designed a custom B monogram around the physical form and movement of a golfer. Negative space creates the head and body while a diagonal stroke completes both the figure and the gesture of the swing.

From a distance, the mark reads as a bold geometric B. At closer range, the golfer emerges.

The player is built into the brand.

The monogram is paired with an assertive stacked wordmark:

BLACK
PEOPLE
GOLF

Rather than relying on familiar golf symbols or traditional country-club codes, the identity makes the name itself the statement.

The Johnson Capital endorsement remains secondary but visible, preserving the strategic relationship between the community brand and the business behind it.

Beyond Traditional Financial Marketing

The outcome was a new community-facing brand with a clear strategic role inside Johnson Capital Planning.

Black People Golf gives the firm a platform for golf experiences, networking, financial engagement and relationship-building while giving the community a place to learn, connect and participate across different levels of golf and financial literacy.

The strategy has extended into experiences that bring the two worlds together, including Drive Your Finances Forward, where golf, fellowship and financial planning occupy the same environment.

The final product is both brand and business infrastructure: a distinct name, endorsed architecture and identity designed to create new pathways into Johnson Capital through community.

Black People Golf opens access to the game.

And to the network around it.

Brand architecture defines how a company, its brands, products, programs and initiatives relate to one another. It becomes especially important when an organization launches a new brand, enters another market, expands its portfolio or needs to decide how prominently the parent company should appear.

Black People Golf uses an endorsed-brand architecture: Black People Golf leads with its own name and identity, while “Powered by Johnson Capital Planning” maintains a strategic connection to the parent brand.

Yes. Brand strategy can create reasons for people to engage with a business before they are ready for a traditional product or sales conversation.

For Black People Golf, naming, strategic positioning, architecture and identity were developed as parts of the same brand system rather than isolated deliverables.

Brand identity engagements may include logo and symbol design, wordmarks, typography, color systems, brand architecture lockups, visual direction, identity guidelines and applications across digital, print, experiential or marketing touchpoints.

Black People Golf was developed collaboratively: Channing & Company led the strategic concept, brand architecture, naming development and identity design; Bri Hawkins of Demi Rebel collaborated on brand strategy; and Johnson Capital Planning participated in strategy and naming development.

The goal is a connected brand system regardless of how many stakeholders contribute to the work.

Investment depends on the scope of the engagement, the complexity of the business, the number of stakeholders, whether naming or brand architecture is required, and the breadth of the final identity system.

Channing & Company develops the recommended scope and investment after understanding the business objective, audience, existing brand infrastructure and what the new brand needs to accomplish.

Timelines vary based on scope, decision-making requirements and the number of strategic and creative components involved. A focused identity engagement will have different requirements from a project involving research, positioning, naming, brand architecture and a complete identity system.

Channing & Company establishes the project schedule during scoping so strategy, stakeholder reviews and design development are built into the process from the beginning.
